A piece of Beatles history is going up for auction: a guitar string used by Paul McCartney on his Epiphone Texan acoustic guitar during the recording of Rubber Soul. The string is expected to fetch over $5,000.
There is a strong possibility that the guitar string was used on “Michelle”, as McCartney played his Epiphone Texan acoustic on that song.
The COA and documentation of the string’s provenance only explain how it went from McCartney to the current owner. The string was won by the vendor’s late cousin, David Cardey, a member of the Beatles fan club, in a competition.
On February 14, 1966, David Cardey received a letter from Johnny Dean, editor of the long-running Beatles Book fanzine. The letter informed Cardey that he had won a guinea (which was just over £1 in pre-decimalization) and a “tantalizing promise”: a piece of Beatle equipment would be sent to him within the next few days.
This item was David’s pride and joy and kept safely by him for over 45 years. letters and string in Excellent condition and comes with David’s original Fan Club card.
The string is being auctioned by Special Auction Services in Newbury, England.
