A chance remark on the stairs at Peter Morris Music in London’s Denmark Street, in October 1963, set off a chain reaction that helped Brian Epstein apply some much-needed leverage on America’s Hollywood-based Capitol label.
Although February 1963 marked the Beatles’ breakthrough in Britain, by the closing months of that year they still had not conquered the United States.
Their manager Brian Epstein had been fighting what seemed like a losing battle to persuade Capitol to release the band’s records in America.
Indeed, when the Beatles eventually hit the big time in the United States in February 1964, both Epstein and Capitol executives obscured the truth behind it.
What is the story behind this essential step in the Beatles’ meteoric rise to worldwide fame? In Capitol Gains, historian Andrew Cook uses corporate and personal archives to reveal the reality behind this and much more, lifting the lid on Capitol’s unfavourable view of the British record industry and how they set out to remix UK master tapes and create distinct US albums.
It shows how, while Capitol’s strategy made the Beatles rich beyond their wildest dreams, Epstein often struggled to balance Capitol’s commercial decisions against the Beatles’ own demands, and explores the efforts made to protect the Beatles’ image as they were caught up in the whirlwind of global success.

The Beatles pioneered so much in the recording studio during their short time together that it’s easy to forget that they formed their own record company in April 1968. Their business plan: to find and fund new musical talent. By the end of the year Apple had signed James Taylor and struck lucky with Mary Hopkin. The much-admired Badfinger followed, along with albums by obvious associates (Billy Preston, Ravi Shankar, Yoko Ono) and not-so-obvious (John Tavener, Modern Jazz Quartet, Radha Krishna Temple) with mixed financial and artistic success. But The Beatles were not businessmen and the early optimism of shiny newness soon soured into chaos. Major acts such as 10cc and Crosby, Stills & Nash slipped through their fingers. Allen Klein was appointed to sort out the mess, but disenfranchised nearly everybody. Paul left The Beatles and sued the others. In 1975, The Beatles’ partnership was legally terminated and Apple Records, a vanity label in all but name, was quietly put to sleep. Apple Of My Eye revisits each of the albums and singles released by Apple between 1968 and 1975, underpinned by the business and legal context of the last days of the world’s greatest band.

Abbey Road Presented with New Mixes in Stereo, 5.1 Surround, and Dolby Atmos; Expanded with Previously Unreleased Session Recordings and Demos
It was 50 years ago today, on August 8, 1969, that the world’s most famous band stepped out from London’s EMI Recording Studios to stride, single-file, across the black and white stripes of Abbey Road’s nearby zebra crossing. With photographer Iain Macmillan balanced on a stepladder and one policeman stopping the street’s light traffic, The Beatles crossed back and forth three times, led by John Lennon, followed by Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison. Just six photos were taken, with the fifth selected as the cover shot for The Beatles’ penultimate studio album, Abbey Road, named after the tree-lined street in which the studios are located.Released September 26, 1969, Abbey Road was not The Beatles’ final album, as Let It Be followed in 1970, but it was the last one John, Paul, George, and Ringo recorded together as a band. The Beatles will celebrate Abbey Road’s anniversary with a suite of beautifully presented packages to be released worldwide on September 27 by Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe. The sessions produced 22 songs in total (one of the outtakes being a version of The Beatles’ ‘I Saw Her Standing There’).
Choba B CCCP has been newly remastered at Abbey Road Studios and will be reissued as the original 11-track Russian release. It will be available in configurations including digital, CD, 180g black vinyl .
Amoeba Gig is the first time the full 21-song set of possibly the most intimate L.A. show Paul has ever played will be released. The album features Grammy Award nominated recordings of ‘That Was Me’ for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance. Additionally, the LP will include an exclusive soundcheck recording of ‘Coming Up’.
