Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald (One Day in September, The Last King of Scotland) wasn’t interested in making yet another film about the Beatles. That’s why when producer Peter Worsley approached him with the rights for One to One — John Lennon and Yoko Ono‘s 1972 benefit concert at Madison Square Garden — the filmmaker asked himself, “What can we do to make this a must-see film rather than just another thing documenting Lennon and the Beatles’ careers?”

The answer was a revelatory inside look at the 18 months John and Yoko spent living in Greenwich Village and delivering an immersive cinematic experience that brings to life electrifying, never-before-seen material and newly restored footage of John’s only full-length, post-Beatles concert.

With music produced by Sean Ono Lennon, One to One: John and Yoko premieres exclusively in Imax theaters on April 11.

Macdonald reveals it “was not the plan” to make an Imax movie. “It’s the first time I’ve had anything in Imax,” he says. “It’s going to get an exclusive Imax window for a week and then go on to regular theaters before it goes on HBO. The distribution of this is a kind of an unusual model — certainly something I’ve never experienced before — where Magnolia and HBO purchased the film together and then got Imax involved. So it’s this collaboration of different people, which is really wonderful.”

The original concert featured John singing such classics as “Imagine,” “Instant Karma,” “Give Peace a Chance,” and the Beatles hit “Come Together.”

(The benefit lineup also included sets from the likes of Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack, but due to rights issues the other acts weren’t part of Lennon’s subsequent concert album or Macdonald’s documentary.)

To pull together the contemporary archival TV footage, Macdonald called on editor Sam Rice-Edwards, who received a co-director credit on the documentary.
