When Paul played his second ever Cavern Club gig since his Beatles days yesterday he was probably expecting a touch of the famous Scouse sense of humour.
But speaking to BBC 6Music he revealed how one heckler caught him off guard.
Sir Paul said: “The Liverpool crowd’s great. I’m telling them about my guitar song and saying to me my guitar was my friend.
“A little scally in the front says ‘That’s coz you didn’t have any others.’ Thank you.”
There was another surprise for the former Beatle during the two-hour set, which featured In Spite of All the Danger, the first song the band recorded and finished with Helter Skelter from The White Album.
He said: “There were two girls I saw in the front row who used to come to the Cavern in those days, honestly that was amazing.”

Paul said performing at the Mathew Street venue had taken him right back to the early-60s, when The Beatles playing there hundreds of times.
He said: “It was fantastic. It just took me right back to when we first came here and as a young up-and-coming group wondering if we were ever going to make it, and we did.
“Just coming back it makes me think of John, George and Ringo, just some of the great times we had here, how exciting it was starting off on our journey from here and from Liverpool.
“It brought back loads of beautiful memories and reminded me of where we started.”
