The Beatles’ Abbey Road returns to number 1 in albums charts, setting new record
The Beatles’ classic album Abbey Road has returned to number one in the UK album charts.

The release – containing one of their signature songs, Come Together – is celebrating its 50-year anniversary, with a special edition release.

What’s more, the fab four’s eleventh album’s return to the chart summit sets a record in British music.

It is now the album with the longest time between reaching number one on the Official Chart, at – take a deep breath – 49 years and 252 days!
The first 17-week run at the top ended 31 January 1970.
Reacting to the news, Paul McCartney commented: ‘It’s hard to believe that Abbey Road still holds up after all these years. But then again it’s a bloody cool album.’

Abbey Road is also this week’s best-selling album on vinyl. It shifted just under 9,000 copies in this format.
The new release includes previously-unheard material from recording sessions.
The Beatles previously held the record for longest gap between number one with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, which had a gap of 49 years and 125 days between topping the chart.
