In February 1964, the American marketplace was flooded with Beatle-related products, though not all businesses were authorized. More than 60 individuals were hauled into court during the first outbreak of Beatlemania in the U.S. on charges of selling unauthorized products using the word “Beatle.”

The genuine Beatle merchandise grossed over fifty million dollars by the end of the year. Official vendors dutifully paid Seltaeb (the Beatles’ U.S. licensing agency) its 10-to-15 percent royalty before stamping the Beatles’ name, likeness, and mystique onto beetle or guitar-shaped brooches, shocking pink plastic ukuleles, or “Beatle nut crunch” popsicles. No one imagined then that John, Paul, George, and Ringo would soon rank among the most influential figures in the history of popular culture.
