Dorinish is a deserted landmass situated within Clew Bay in County Mayo, Ireland. Throughout the early 1970s, it served as a short-lived home for a hippie collective that formed a community under the sponsorship of John Lennon, who held the title to the property at the time.

John Lennon had originally acquired the site in 1967 for a price of £1,700, though it had formerly been utilized by maritime vessels for its stone deposits. Eventually, it transformed into a tranquil sanctuary for the musician and his relatives.

Following his legal separation from his spouse Cynthia, the territory remained vacant until 1970, when Lennon encouraged Sid Rawle, known as the “King of the Hippies,” and Timi Walsh to launch a commune there. For roughly two years, a gathering of about twenty-five individuals resided on Dorinish, cultivating their own produce and nursing their families. However, the community dissolved in 1972 after a blaze destroyed their primary storage tent.

After Lennon was killed, Yoko Ono auctioned the property for approximately £30,000, giving the entirety of the funds to a local Irish orphanage. Today, Dorinish serves as a pasture for farm animals and occasionally attracts devoted admirers of the Beatles, even hosting an artistic summer program called “Aerial Blue” in July 2011.
