MUSEUM ON SAVILE ROW COULD CAUSE CONGESTION, ASSOCIATION WARNS

The project to open a Beatles museum at their former headquarters on Savile Row is facing pushback from the Savile Row Bespoke Association.

This location is where The Beatles performed their iconic rooftop concert. The former headquarters of the Fab Four on London’s Savile Row is set to become an impressive attraction, as it will allow fans and visitors to step onto the famous rooftop where the band played their final live performance in 1969. However, Mark Henderson, representing the Savile Row Bespoke Association, warned that it could cause “dangerous congestion” and have a “negative impact” on local businesses.

He told council planners: “The pavements on the street are narrow, and already frequently obstructed by visitors.” The association represents prominent brands like Edward Sexton, who famously tailored suits for The Beatles.

Apple Corps, the Fab Four’s record label, plans to open The Beatles at 3 Savile Row next year. The seven-story museum where John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr played together for the last time will also feature a recreation of their former basement studio.

Representatives told Westminster City Council that the venue will be a “local cultural asset (not just a tourist destination)” and an “educational platform rooted in music, creativity, and social history.”

What’s Next? The council will make its decision in due course. The project is fully backed by surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono.

Paul McCartney previously shared: “There are so many special memories inside those walls, not to mention on the roof. Tourists come to England and they can go to Abbey Road, but they can’t go inside (and) it snares up the traffic and the drivers get really annoyed, So I thought this was a terrific idea (Savile Row).”
