Paul McCartney releases the audiobook, “The Man on the Run,” the latest installment in Audible’s popular “Words + Music” series.

Now available, “The Man on the Run” offers a deeper look into the legendary former Beatle’s career following his departure from the group, focusing especially on his era with Wings, as well as other topics like the beginning and development of his relationship with Linda McCartney. This new audiobook emerged from Morgan Neville’s acclaimed documentary, Man on the Run, which premiered on Amazon Prime in late February. Fans can now listen to expanded interviews conducted for the film, alongside specially curated musical performances.

“I don’t normally spend much time looking back, but I was flattered that Morgan said he was interested in this period,” Paul stated in a press release.

“The early days of Wings were quite tough and unrewarding, but in the end, we managed to write some hits. Morgan made me reflect on things I hadn’t thought about in a long time. He asked me the right questions, and I loved reliving those moments.” Neville and Paul spent three years talking in different locations around the world. The filmmaker wanted their chats to be informal rather than formal interviews, allowing ideas to flow freely and, hopefully, revealing untold stories. It delves into key transitional moments, such as his retreat to Scotland after the breakup of The Beatles and his post-Wings years, when painting became a way to process Linda’s illness.

His relationship with John Lennon is another common thread in “The Man on the Run,” which narrates stories of their eventual reunion.

“One night I was in bed with Linda, watching television, when I saw Johnny Cash come on with his band,” he recalls in The Man on the Run. “He had formed a new band with Carl Perkins, who was part of it, and they were a couple of great musicians Johnny had put together. So I thought, ‘Great. He just formed a band. Maybe I could too; maybe I should start from scratch.'”

The Cash anecdote is just one of many fascinating stories fans will hear in “The Man on the Run,” available now on Audible.

In the 1970s, Paul McCartney was a man on the run.

After the breakup of The Beatles, the biggest and most culturally influential band of the 1960s, Paul McCartney faced an impossible question: Who was he now? At 27 years old, being a Beatle was all he had known since he was a teenager. Now he had to figure out who he was as an artist, as a husband, and as a father.

In this Audible Original, hear Paul tell the story of his most transformative decade in his own words. Based on interviews conducted with Paul by Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville over three years in Los Angeles, New York, and London, this is an immersive deep dive into this period of his life.

From his retreat to a dilapidated farmhouse in rural Scotland with his wife Linda and their young family, to forming Wings and touring universities in a van, to recording Band on the Run in Nigeria—this is the intimate, unfiltered story of how Paul McCartney reinvented himself.
