Filming for Sam Mendes’s upcoming Beatles biopic series took place outside Ye Cracke on Rice Street yesterday, Wednesday.

Filmmakers recreated a scene outside one of John Lennon’s favorite spots during his time as a student at the Liverpool College of Art in the late 1950s.

At that time, the iconic Liverpool pub was frequented by John and his art school friend Stuart Sutcliffe, where their drink of choice was reportedly a Black Velvet, a mix of Guinness and sparkling wine.

Ye Cracke was also where John Lennon brought Cynthia Powell after the couple met at an art-college dance. The couple would later marry. A plaque can be seen at the venue commemorating an occasion in 1960 when John Lennon, Stuart Sutcliffe, Bill Harry, and Rod Murray gathered and formed a band called The Dissenters over a beer.

Today, over sixty years later, the legendary Rice Street pub has once again undergone a transformation for a Beatles project.

Sam Mendes‘s visionary four-movie cinematic event will narrate the history of the band through the distinct viewpoints of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

The movies feature Harris Dickinson as Lennon, Paul Mescal as McCartney, Joseph Quinn as Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Starr, with a theatrical release slated for April 2028.
