Susan Kendall Newman, the eldest child of cinematic legend Paul Newman, has passed away at the age of 72. She was a multifaceted individual known for her work as an actress, a producer, and a dedicated activist. Her death, which did not go widely reported at the time, occurred on August 2.
Born in New York City in 1953, Susan, whose mother was Paul Newman’s first wife, Jackie Witte, first made her mark in theater. Her most recognized acting role was in Robert Zemeckis’s 1978 comedy, I Wanna Hold Your Hand. She portrayed Peggy Sue, one of a group of teenagers determined to meet The Beatles during their historic debut on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.
She also appeared in films like Slap Shot (1977) and A Wedding (1978).
Newman later shifted her focus to television production, earning an Emmy nomination for her contributions to the made-for-TV movie The Shadow Box (1980), which was directed by her father and starred her stepmother, Joanne Woodward.
In 1980, she took on a significant leadership role as the Executive Director of the Scott Newman Foundation, an organization established by her father after the death of her brother, Scott, from a drug overdose in 1978. In this capacity, she became a prominent voice in drug abuse prevention. Her advocacy involved testifying before Congress, speaking globally, and spearheading educational initiatives like the creation of Drug-Free Kids: A Parent’s Guide and a groundbreaking program where students produced their own anti-drug commercials.
Her advocacy broadened beyond substance abuse, eventually encompassing issues like juvenile justice, healthcare, education, and environmental preservation. She founded the Newman Consulting Company, providing expertise to various organizations on prevention and fundraising strategies, and earned a Grammy nomination for producing an audiobook series of classical literature, with profits aiding family literacy.
The family’s obituary in The New York Times confirmed that she died on August 2 of this year due to complications from chronic health conditions. They remembered her for her “sharp wit and tongue, generosity and love, and her devotion to family and friends.” She is survived by her sister, Stephanie, and three half-sisters: Nell, Melissa, and Clea.
