Sixty years after a young New York fan received a piece of Fab Four lore in the mail, the front door key to Paul McCartney’s boyhood home is heading to auction.

Estimated at £2,000–£3,000, the key—bundled with a vintage photograph of the property and the original 1965 dispatch letter—goes under the hammer on October 7 via Gloucestershire auctioneers Dominic Winter.

The Backstory : 

Long before global stadium tours, 20 Forthlin Road in Allerton, Liverpool, served as ground zero. McCartney moved into the municipal house in 1955 with parents Mary and Jim alongside brother Mike. Following Mary’s passing a year later, Jim gifted young Paul a guitar, sparking a creative crucible where McCartney and John Lennon hammered out early classics like “There’s a Place” and “She Loves You”.

The National Trust now reveres that living room as the literal birthplace of The Beatles.

After the McCartneys moved out by 1963, subsequent resident Ashley Jones inherited dual original front-door keys alongside wife Sheila. In 1965, a 13-year-old self-described “hopelessly lovesick Beatlemaniac” named Kathy Salt mailed Jones from New York. Jones replied with the snapshot and a key he believed once belonged to Paul himself.

Now 60 years later, Salt is parting with the artifact.

“I’m hopeful that my treasures might become someone else’s to hold dear,” Salt reflected.
