Beatles and Rolling Stones Autograph Book Goes Up for Auction

A remarkable collection of rock and roll memorabilia, including a rare autograph book signed by both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, is set to be sold at auction. The collection, which also features certificates for the song “Yesterday” and a pair of sunglasses said to have belonged to John Lennon, will be on display at Catherine Southon Auctioneers & Valuers in Chislehurst this month.

The centerpiece of the sale is an autograph book filled with signatures from the most iconic bands of the 1960s. The owner, Edwina Smith, was just 16 when she befriended Dennis, a caretaker at Salisbury City Hall. Dennis allowed her backstage access to shows in 1963, where she met The Beatles and even sat on Paul McCartney’s knee. This special access continued, allowing her to collect autographs from other legendary artists like The Rolling Stones (including Brian Jones), The Hollies, and Little Richard. A spokesperson for the auction house noted that having signatures from both bands in a single book is “pretty rare.” Ms. Smith’s autograph book is expected to sell for £5,000 to £7,000.

Also being auctioned are two 1966 Ivor Novello certificates for “Yesterday,” which were never collected by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The awards, valued at £600 to £800, were left with The Beatles’ music publisher and eventually passed to an assistant, who still holds them today.

Adding to the unique items is a pair of John Lennon’s alleged sunglasses, with honey-colored frames and tinted lenses. The glasses, estimated to be worth between £2,000 and £3,000, belong to actor Stephen Buckley, who played Lennon in the film Birth Of The Beatles. He stated he received them from a woman who worked for Lennon after a planned meeting between the two never materialized.
