The project was spearheaded by Allen Klein and Apple Corps following a new royalty agreement with Capitol Records; Klein convinced the band that the album was an easy way to generate substantial revenue with minimal effort.

The tracklist, curated by Allan Steckler of ABKCO, focused primarily on the band’s later work, though it also featured “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “I Should Have Known Better”—two tracks previously tucked away on the United Artists A Hard Day’s Night soundtrack.

Although it was nearly titled The Beatles Again (a name that actually made it onto some early labels), the title was changed to Hey Jude at the last minute, leaving the new name visible only on the album’s spine. While it saw a wide international release in markets like Japan and Germany, it remained a sought-after import in the UK for nearly a decade before its official British debut in 1979.

This album is perhaps most iconic for its famous cover art, which features images captured during the group’s final photo shoot. These historic portraits were taken on August 22, 1969, at Tittenhurst Park in Surrey, England—the estate that John Lennon had recently made his home.
