ICONIC BEATLES-ERA FLUTE HEADING TO AUCTION

An exceptional flute with an illustrious history in British pop culture and cinema is officially going under the hammer. The bespoke instrument is famous for its prominent role in The Beatles’ 1967 hit The Fool On The Hill. Scheduled for auction on June 12 in Wiltshire, a one-of-a-kind musical instrument is expected to fetch between £10,000 and £20,000. This bespoke masterpiece was crafted by Arthur Cooper, who is widely recognized as the finest British flute manufacturer of the 1900s.

The custom-built instrument belonged to the renowned British flute player Jack Ellory until he passed away in 2009.

Ellory was one of the post-war era’s most sought-after studio musicians, contributing to an array of classical pieces, pop records, movie soundtracks, and live shows. His instrument can be heard on:

Classic Cinema: Sean Connery-era James Bond movies, The Pink Panther franchise, and the musical feature film Oliver!, Television: The hit 1960s series The Avengers. Chart-Topping Pop: The 1960 top-five single Goodness Gracious Me, featuring Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren.

Because of his elite skill, Ellory served as the go-to principal flautist for iconic composers such as Henry Mancini, John Barry, and Ron Goodwin, alongside legendary Beatles producer George Martin.

Perhaps the instrument’s most legendary moment occurred in 1967, when celebrated Beatles producer George Martin personally recruited Ellory to record the flute arrangement for the Paul McCartney-composed song The Fool On The Hill. The track was featured on the Magical Mystery Tour album, which successfully claimed the number-one spot on the UK charts.

This upcoming auction highlights a fascinating paradox in the music industry: the immense cultural value of the studio musician. The auction is scheduled to take place on June 12 in Wiltshire.
