A fresh documentary titled “John Lennon: The Last Interview” is making its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the film focuses on December 8, 1980—the fateful day John Lennon and Yoko Ono sat down for what would become their final joint conversation. The session took place at their Dakota residence with a crew from San Francisco’s KFRC radio station. At the time, the couple was busy promoting their newly arrived album, Double Fantasy, unaware that this would be John’s parting dialogue with the world.

To construct the narrative, Soderbergh weaves together archival footage and audio recordings, supplemented by AI enhancements (with Meta credited as a technical collaborator). The film features voices from the three KFRC staffers who conducted the sit-down, as well as record executive Bert Keane, who was present for the recording but passed away during the documentary’s production.

Throughout the exchange, the pair reflects—both individually and as a unit—on the growing divide between genders and the urgent need for better emotional connection. Lennon candidly suggests that men simply need to become better listeners. He glows while describing the rewards of being a “househusband” dedicated to the daily upbringing of his young son, Sean (though he notes that the nanny typically took over shortly after breakfast). He expresses the profound joy of returning to the studio after a five-year hiatus to create a collaborative project celebrating the happiness of married life, occasionally touching upon his past with his first wife, Cynthia, and their son, Julian.

Soderbergh successfully portrays Lennon at his most magnetic and compassionate, yet also at his most preachy and exasperating. During the interview, john clarifies that the track “Starting Over” carries a broader cultural weight. He discusses the social rift between men and women that surfaced with the rise of third-wave feminism in the early ’70s, sensing that this tension was finally beginning to fade. Consequently, he explains that the song’s theme of reconciliation was intended as a message for all men and women to finally bridge the gap. It is a striking, moving sentiment that highlights Lennon’s natural ability to synthesize the zeitgeist and mirror it back to the public.

Double Fantasy ended a half-decade of silence that began in 1975 following Sean’s birth. Lennon’s decision to shelf his music career to become a primary caregiver was a radical concept at the time, signaling a shift toward men embracing domestic roles. True to form, Lennon was at the forefront of a cultural shift, yet he hadn’t spoken extensively about it until this recording. In the film, he details his routine: waking up early to prepare a sugar-free breakfast for Sean and ensuring the toddler watched Sesame Street instead of commercial-heavy programs.

The documentary captures a man who was ready to step back into the spotlight. He speaks with excitement about touring again and performing with the musicians from the Double Fantasy sessions. Lennon was only 40 when he was killed; “The Last Interview” makes it clear that he was just beginning his second act.
