On May 18, 1971, John Lennon and Yoko Ono made their way back to Nice, France, after a brief trip to Barcelona, Spain.

The couple had originally been staying on the French Riviera to showcase their films, Fly and Apotheosis, at the Cannes Film Festival. However, they took a quick detour to Barcelona on May 17 to meet with Spanish legal counsel. They were seeking advice on a potential custody battle for Kyoko, Ono’s seven-year-old daughter. Following their return, they spent a few more days in the French Riviera before finally heading back to London on May 22.

At this point, The Beatles had officially disbanded, and Lennon was focused on his solo work and activism, with Yoko by his side. Their presence at the Cannes Film Festival, where Yoko Ono exhibited her art, reflected their growing influence beyond music and into the avant-garde and political spheres.
