Liverpool Music Heritage Trail: The iconic location of North End Music Stores (NEMS) at 12-14 Whitechapel was honored with a commemorative plaque. This milestone pays tribute to the space where Brian Epstein propelled The Beatles toward global stardom.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram, Peter Hooton (chair of the Beatles Legacy Group), and Bill Addy (chief executive of the Liverpool BID Company), honoring a historic partnership.

Freda Kelly, former secretary of the official fan club that operated out of those very offices, shared her memories of the place, she told the Echo: “I loved NEMS and I used to go in there before I started working for Brian Epstein. I started in 1962 and my father said that it would only last a year. NEMS was the centre of everything and if you were in the Kardomah Café on Stanley Street you could look up to NEMS and see if The Beatles were in. There were no seats in Epstein’s office so they used to all lean against a shelf and you’d be able to instantly tell if they were in there.” Freda stayed there for ten years, accumulating countless experiences alongside the British quartet.

It was in this building that Brian Epstein formalized the management contract with the band on October 1, 1962, after discovering them live at the Cavern Club, spurred on by the insistence of his customers. From within those walls, he also negotiated the crucial record deal with Parlophone (EMI). Although the business closed its doors in the nineties and the original structure was demolished in 2012, its historical mark on the city remains intact.

The four-story establishment opened its doors in 1960 and quickly transformed into the musical epicenter of Liverpool. Located just a short distance from Mathew Street, the business was born from Brian’s vision, turning the family furniture store into one of the most prominent record shops in the north of England.

Although NEMS finished trading in the 1990s and the original building was demolished in 2012, its legacy remains a significant part of Liverpool history.

NEMS was not simply a record store; it functioned as the catalyst where Brian Epstein’s business vision and The Beatles’ raw talent met to redefine popular music.
