US Rights Secured: Based on a 2017 settlement with Sony Music Publishing, McCartney utilized the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976 to initiate the reclamation process.

The 50% Share: The deal pertains specifically to McCartney’s 50% share of the Lennon/McCartney partnership for the U.S. territory, covering classics like “Yesterday,” “Hey Jude,” and “Let It Be”.

Timeline: While the process began with earlier songs in 2018, the rights to the full catalogue, including later songs, were finalized by 2026.

Limitations: This reclamation mainly applies to the United States. Sony/ATV continues to own/administer the songs in the rest of the world.

This marks the end of a decades-long saga to regain control of his songs, which began when ATV Music bought the rights in 1969 and were later purchased by Michael Jackson, eventually becoming a Sony-owned entity.

The U.S. copyright reclamation involved 178 Lennon/McCartney compositions written between 1962 and 1971. This includes songs from albums ranging from Please Please Me to Let It Be, as well as various singles.
