The newly opened Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles was the setting for a historic gathering. Paul McCartney and his wife Nancy Shevell visited the venue, where they were personally welcomed by its founders, filmmaker George Lucas and businesswoman Mellody Hobson.
Designed by architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects and located in Exposition Park, the museum opened its doors in September 2026 after years of development. Spanning approximately 300,000 square feet, the institution is dedicated exclusively to narrative art—the discipline of storytelling through visual imagery. Its permanent collection houses over 40,000 pieces, ranging from Norman Rockwell paintings and classic book illustrations to comic art, cinema storyboards, and visual archives.
There was a moment during the visit when Paul McCartney came face-to-face with himself. Walking through the galleries of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, he stood before paintings featuring photographs of The Beatles and the cover of Abbey Road, the iconic album that marked the band’s final studio recording sessions.
There was Paul in the present, contemplating that period of his life—his 27-year-old self, immortalized on the most famous album cover in music history. It was the creator transformed into a spectator of his own myth.
In front of those artworks depicting the world’s most celebrated crosswalk and the visual maturity of The Beatles, time seemed to stand still for a second. It was Paul McCartney reuniting with his own youth, with his lifelong brothers, and with the indelible legacy he carved forever into global culture.
The connection between George Lucas and The Beatles extends beyond this recent visit. In addition to the deep influence of the British band’s music on the pop culture that inspired Lucas’s generation, both figures share technical collaborations: Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) visual teams, founded by Lucas, have crafted music video production work for McCartney. The visit highlights the union of two titans of contemporary culture who revolutionized visual and musical storytelling in the 20th century.
