In an upcoming series of films about The Beatles, actor Paul Mescal is preparing to portray Paul McCartney. For the role, he’s been taught how to play the guitar with his left hand, just like the famous musician.

According to a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Mescal is undergoing intensive training alongside his fellow cast members. The group includes Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison.

Four upcoming biopics about The Beatles, which will be released in 2028, have been called “the first binge-able theatrical experience” by Sony.

In an interview, Paul Mescal, who will portray Paul McCartney, shared that he’s met the musician a few times and “adores” him, noting that he “changed the world.” Mescal also gave a glimpse into his training for the role. His typical day involves listening to The Beatles in the car on the way to a place called Bobbington. There, he and the other actors practice walking, talking, and playing like the band members. They then listen to The Beatles on the way home.

Mescal is fully committed to the part, even learning to play the guitar left-handed, just like McCartney. He explained that it would be “crazy” not to, saying it would be like sending a message that he doesn’t truly “love” McCartney, whom he considers “the fucking coolest man on planet Earth.”

To prepare even more, Mescal has been reading John & Paul: A Love Story in Songs by Ian Leslie. He says the book has helped him see the relationship between Lennon and McCartney in a new way, calling their musical partnership “the greatest creative collaboration that we’ve maybe ever had as human beings.”
