The budget for the highly anticipated Beatles biopic project, titled “The Beatles – Four Films,” has been made public. Set to premiere in theaters in April 2028, this unique undertaking is being helmed by director Sam Mendes and will consist of four distinct feature films, each telling the story from the viewpoint of a different band member.

The cast features Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr. This project stands out from previous Beatles films because it has the full cooperation of the two surviving members, as well as the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison.

According to a report from Puck, each of the four films is expected to cost approximately $100 million. This hefty budget was approved by Tom Rothman, the chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group.

While some industry experts are concerned about the films’ ability to recoup such a massive investment, the project also has the potential to be a monumental commercial success. A producer who knows Rothman said: “he’s going to have to retire sometime, and the Beatles movies might be the right time to do it.”

A total budget of $400 million would rank it as the fifth most costly movie ever made. It would sit just behind Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ($416 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($447 million), and the two Jurassic World films, Fallen Kingdom and Dominion, which are both tied at $465 million.

For a movie to break even, it typically needs to earn roughly two and a half times its budget at the box office. This would mean each of the Beatles films would need to bring in around $250 million to cover its costs, placing their collective break-even point at approximately $1 billion. This would be a remarkable achievement, as only two music biopics in history have ever surpassed the $250 million mark.

In addition, the unique marathon format of The Beatles – Four Films—with all four movies premiering over a single month—could generate significant interest among moviegoers, potentially turning the project into a massive hit.
