A long-lost cinematic recording of The Beatles’ appearance on the BBC’s Top Of The Pops has finally resurfaced. The original 35mm film reels, which feature the legendary band performing “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “You Can’t Do That,” are slated for a professional restoration before being handed back to the BBC.

These performances were originally taped on March 19, 1964, just one day before the release of the single that would secure the group’s fourth number-one hit in the UK.

Unfortunately, due to the BBC’s common practice in the 1960s of erasing and recycling videotapes, this footage had been missing for decades.

The discovery was announced by the preservation organization “Film Is Fabulous.” The group explained that they were handed the rare 35mm negative by the family of a late industry insider during a recent gathering of film collectors in Surrey.

In a statement posted to social media, the organization confirmed they are coordinating with the BBC to ensure the restored footage is shared with the public.

Describing the contents, the group noted that the footage was captured at the BBC Television Theatre in London during the peak of “Beatlemania.” The film offers a candid glimpse behind the scenes, showing the studio environment, the crew, and the band members interacting.

The recording includes four takes of “Can’t Buy Me Love”—two of which were cut short by technical glitches—and two takes of “You Can’t Do That.”

Between takes, the members are seen laughing and dancing, and in one memorable moment, John Lennon makes a comical face during a close-up shot.

If the restoration is successful, this material will stand as the earliest known surviving footage of the band from the Top Of The Pops program.
