On a day like today, 1 February 1968, Ringo Starr held his first rehearsal—out of three in total—for his upcoming appearance on Cilla Black’s television show, which would eventually air on February 6, 1968.

The rehearsals took place at the purpose-built Television Rehearsal Rooms on Victoria Road in North Acton, London.

Ringo’s appearance was for the second edition of Cilla, a variety program featuring different guests each week.

On this occasion, the lineup included comedian Spike Milligan and ventriloquist Peter Brough.

Ringo Starr appeared during the opening credits and participated in a series of sketches:

He helped Cilla sort through her fan mail and introduced her performance of the song “I’m Playing Second Fiddle To A Football Team.”

Ringo interacted with Peter Brough and performed with his own “dummy,” introduced as Ariadne.

Also, Ringo and Cilla Black performed a duet of the 1905 song “Nellie Dean” and sang and danced to the 1917 tune “Do You Like Me?”
