MARKING 57 YEARS SINCE THE BEATLES' LEGENDARY ROOFTOP CONCERT

On a chilly Thursday, January 30, 1969, The Beatles—joined by keyboardist Billy Preston—delivered their historic final live set atop the Apple headquarters at 3 Savile Row, London. This iconic rooftop gig served as the grand finale for their Let It Be documentary.

The production was a massive undertaking, utilizing ten cameras strategically placed to capture every angle: five on the roof itself, one on a neighboring building, three on the street to film the confused and curious passersby, and a final hidden camera tucked away in the lobby.

The London winter was unforgiving that day, with a piercing wind whipping across the roof by noon. To stave off the cold, John Lennon donned Yoko Ono’s fur coat, while Ringo Starr opted for his wife Maureen’s bright red raincoat. Down in the basement, George Martin, Glyn Johns, and Alan Parsons managed the recording, capturing the 42-minute performance on two eight-track machines while monitoring the scene via a closed-circuit feed. The audio tracks meticulously isolated the band’s instruments and vocals, including Billy Preston’s soulful organ and a synchronization track for the film editors.

Despite the legendary status the event now holds, the band was initially hesitant. During last-minute setups, the group held a meeting where George Harrison voiced the strongest reservations; however, he eventually gave in after seeing the enthusiasm of his bandmates.

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were the first to step out onto the roof, accompanied by Billy Preston and Maureen Starkey. Before starting, Ringo had to shift his drums after realizing roadie Mal Evans had bolted his kit to the wrong spot.

Adding a touch of local art to the backdrop, a painting by Tom Newman—the vocalist of the psych-rock band July—sat behind the drummer. Newman, who had coincidentally visited Apple that morning, can be spotted in the footage standing near a chimney in a maroon jacket, eventually reclaiming his artwork once the music stopped.

Kicking off around noon to coincide with the local lunch break, The Beatles’ legendary rooftop concert quickly drew massive crowds to the streets of Savile Row. While the band remained mostly out of sight, their music echoed through the air, bringing nearby traffic to a standstill and eventually prompting a response from the West End Central police station. During a brief pause for a tape change in the basement studio, the group—accompanied by Billy Preston—played a spontaneous rendition of “God Save The Queen,” a moment that remained largely unheard until the 2021 release of the Get Back documentary.

As the set progressed, road manager Mal Evans attempted to delay the authorities with excuses about the sound system, but police officers eventually insisted on being taken to the roof. Their arrival coincided with the second performance of “Don’t Let Me Down,” a take the band realized was being interrupted when they noticed the camera crew shifting their focus toward the advancing officers. Despite the tension, the band transitioned seamlessly into their final song, “Get Back.” The performance nearly faltered when Evans, under police pressure, cut the power to the guitar amplifiers; however, a defiant George Harrison quickly switched his equipment back on to finish the set.

The historic session famously concluded with John Lennon’s witty remark about “passing the audition,” a line that later became the iconic closing of the Let It Be album. Following the final notes, the band members exited the roof one by one, leaving behind a moment in music history that would later be fully preserved and showcased in Peter Jackson’s comprehensive documentary.
