George Martin considered ‘Because‘ to have the best vocal harmony of the quartet.

“Because,” the penultimate track on the B-side of Abbey Road, stands as a monumental testament to the maturation of The Beatles as vocal arrangers. While the band’s early catalog was defined by high-energy, tight vocal interplay, “Because” represents a departure into something far more sophisticated—a haunting, ethereal masterclass in choral precision.

The song was born from John Lennon’s inspiration upon hearing Yoko Ono play Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.” Lennon asked her to play the chords backward, which provided the harmonic foundation for his arpeggiated guitar motif. The resulting composition is a prime example of the band’s late-period artistic evolution, where the simplicity of their pop roots gave way to complex, almost classical structures.

The track was recorded at Abbey Road Studios over several days in August 1969.

The foundational sound is a blend of John Lennon’s electric guitar, George Harrison’s guitar, and Paul McCartney’s bass, all played through a Leslie speaker to create that signature shimmering, swirling effect. George Martin provided the iconic harpsichord-like tone using a Baldwin electric harpsichord.

This is the song’s crowning achievement. Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison sang their parts together, and then overdubbed them two more times, resulting in a wall of nine voices. This technique produced a rich, resonant texture that remains one of the most identifiable sounds in rock history.

George Martin’s role in this era of The Beatles cannot be overstated. While the songs were undeniably brilliant at their core, Martin acted as the master architect who polished the rough edges and ensured the frequency balance remained pristine. He understood how to frame the group’s evolving complexity, and in “Because,” he found the perfect canvas.

Reflecting on the track for the Love album production in 2006, Martin noted:

“An inspired offering from John when we recorded it for the ‘Abbey Road’ album. Having heard the opening of Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata,’ he developed a pattern of arpeggios on his guitar that laid the foundation for this song. Listening again to this track, with the harmonies that only John, Paul, and George could provide, one realizes what great vocalists they really were.”

Martin famously considered “Because” to be the finest example of vocal harmony in The Beatles’ entire discography. He saw in it the culmination of years of experimentation—a moment where the band’s vocal interplay reached a peak of technical and emotional perfection.

“Because” is a sublime departure from the band’s more conventional pop masterpieces. It lacks the immediate hooks of “Help!” or “She Loves You,” yet it captures something far more profound: the sound of a band at the absolute zenith of their collective musical intelligence.

The track occupies a unique space on Abbey Road. It is a bridge between the rock-heavy tracks and the grand orchestral finale of the album’s medley. It serves as a reminder that The Beatles were not just songwriters; they were explorers of timbre and texture. In this track, their voices function like instruments in a chamber orchestra, perfectly balanced, impeccably timed, and profoundly moving.

By the time they recorded “Because,” the “five minds” of The Beatles and George Martin were working in such complete synchronicity that they were capable of creating art that defied the conventions of the era. It is, perhaps, the most crystalline reflection of their growth—a brief, breathtaking glimpse into a musical maturity that few groups have ever reached, and perhaps none have ever surpassed.
