“Because,” the penultimate track on the B-side of Abbey Road, stands as a monumental testament to the maturation of The Beatles as vocal arrangers. The song was born from John Lennon’s inspiration upon hearing Yoko Ono play Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.” Lennon asked her to play the chords backward, which provided the harmonic foundation for his arpeggiated guitar motif. Listening again to this track, with the harmonies that only John, Paul, and George could provide, one realizes what great vocalists they really were.”

Martin famously considered “Because” to be the finest example of vocal harmony in The Beatles’ entire discography. He saw in it the culmination of years of experimentation—a moment where the band’s vocal interplay reached a peak of technical and emotional perfection.
