Hitting the UK shelves in February 1967, the double A-side single “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields Forever” is frequently hailed as the finest single ever produced.

Despite entering the charts on February 23 and maintaining a presence for eleven weeks, it famously peaked at number two—a result of chart compilers splitting the sales between the two tracks. In reality, the record outsold the number-one spot by nearly double. Released as Parlophone R 5570, it featured a rare picture sleeve, a luxury seldom afforded to Beatles singles in the UK.

The recording of ‘Penny Lane’ began on 29 December 1966. Initially working alone, Paul McCartney recorded six takes of piano chords to form the song’s basis, onto track one of the tape.

Paul composed “Penny Lane” at his London residence on a piano vibrantly decorated in psychedelic colors. The studio process began in late 1966 with Paul layering various piano textures, including a tremolo-heavy track and the distinctive “Mrs. Mills” honky-tonk sound, while Ringo Starr contributed percussion.

‘Penny Lane’/‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ was released on 13 February 1967 in the USA, and on 17 February 1967 in the UK. In Britain it was housed in a limited edition picture sleeve, unusual in the 1960s.

Meanwhile, John Lennon drew inspiration for “Strawberry Fields Forever” from his childhood memories of a Salvation Army home in Liverpool. He began writing the piece in Spain while filming How I Won The War, viewing it as one of his most authentic, experience-driven compositions.

The recording of “Strawberry Fields Forever” was an ambitious undertaking, requiring an unprecedented 55 hours of studio time to evolve from a simple demo into a psychedelic landmark.

During the filming of its promotional video, John Lennon even happened upon an 1843 circus poster that would later inspire “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!” While the single missed the top spot in Britain, it hit number one in the United States and dominated charts globally from Canada to Australia, eventually finding a permanent home on the Magical Mystery Tour album later that year.
