The One to One benefit concert at Madison Square Garden took place on a day like today, August 30, 1972. Today marks 54 years since that historic show.

By 1972, John Lennon and Yoko Ono had relocated to New York City, immersing themselves deeply in political activism and counterculture movements.

Appalled by news reports exposing the tragic neglect and inhumane conditions at the Willowbrook State School for children with intellectual disabilities, Lennon and Ono resolved to act. Partnering with television journalist Geraldo Rivera, they organized the One to One benefit concerts at Madison Square Garden on August 30, 1972. Intended to raise funds and awareness, these shows would inadvertently become the only full-length, ticketed solo concerts Lennon ever performed after the breakup of The Beatles.

To bring his post-Beatles repertoire to life, John Lennon assembled a formidable group of musicians. Backing Lennon and Ono was Elephant’s Memory, a gritty New York street-rock band, complemented by legendary session drummer Jim Keltner. The One to One event comprised two distinct performances—an afternoon matinee and an evening show.

Lennon delivered energetic renditions of his solo hits, including “Instant Karma!“, “Mother“, “Cold Turkey“, and the anthem “Imagine“. He also revisited his Beatles catalog with a raw performance of “Come Together“, closing the sets with Elvis Presley’s classic “Hound Dog“. Beyond Lennon’s set, the star-studded benefit featured guest performances by Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, and Sha Na Na.

The 1972 One to One concerts raised over $1.5 million for the patients of Willowbrook, ultimately contributing to public pressure that led to the institution’s closure. Musically, recordings from August 30 were compiled into the posthumous live album and video concert Live in New York City, released in 1986.

These Madison Square Garden shows stand as definitive monuments to John Lennon‘s artistic evolution, political conscience, and enduring legacy as a live performer.
