Renowned 1960s psychedelic pop visionary Peter Max passed away at age 88 in Manhattan on Monday, September 14, 2026, family sources confirmed. His son, Adam, shared the news in a Wednesday release, noting that while no exact medical cause was provided, the artist had long battled advanced dementia.

Famed for embodying “flower power” optimism in chromatic, high-saturation art stamped on everything from postal mail to luxury cruise liners, Max also served as official artist for marquee spectacles including the Olympics, Super Bowl, Indy 500, FIFA World Cup, and World Series.

Created visuals or worked alongside legends like Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, Taylor Swift, and the Grateful Dead, plus iconic album jackets for Aretha Franklin, Yes, and Badfinger.

The Yellow Submarine Saga: Popular myth occasionally credits Max for the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine look, though official credit belongs to the late Heinz Edelmann. Max claimed in a 2012 interview he drafted early concept art before handing off the reins. Recounting a near-miss with the Fab Four, Max shared that a phone call from John Lennon led to a European trip—The Yellow Submarine producers needed him for about 17 months for the full animation rollout, but Max opted out, recommending Edelmann instead.

Adam Max remembered his father as a force of boundless creativity, highlighting his genuine warmth, relentless curiosity, and unique optical philosophy of viewing the world through pure beauty.
