LIVERPOOL MUSEUM TO EXHIBIT '70 YEARS OF THE CAVERN CLUB'

The Museum of Liverpool will open the major exhibition “70 Years of The Cavern Club” on Saturday, January 16, 2027, coinciding exactly with the 70th anniversary of the opening of the legendary venue, The Cavern Club.

Content: Over 200 iconic objects tracing seven decades of musical history, from its beginnings as a basement jazz club to becoming a global cultural phenomenon and the birthplace of the Merseybeat sound.

The exhibition follows the remarkable story of the legendary Mathew Street venue, from its beginnings as a post-war jazz club in a Liverpool cellar to its status as a global symbol of live music and cultural identity.

Internationally recognised as the birthplace of The Beatles and the defining venue of Merseybeat, The Cavern Club’s story is inseparable from that of Liverpool itself, shaped by the same social, cultural and economic fortunes as the city around it.

Personal stories and first-hand accounts will run throughout the exhibition, bringing the wider story of Liverpool’s music culture to life through the voices of the communities who lived it.

In the 1960s The Cavern Club launched careers that transformed popular music forever. Over the decades the venue has continued to attract legends including The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Queen, Oasis, Adele and Jamie Webster. Through objects, photographs, film, music and personal stories, the exhibition traces how the venue continues to inspire generations of musicians and music fans from Liverpool and around the world.

This exhibition has been developed in collaboration with The Cavern Club.
