Just one day after his return from a vacation in Tenerife, George Harrison attended the final of the Lancashire and Cheshire Beat Group Contest as a celebrity judge on May 10, 1963.
Held at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall, the event placed Harrison on a panel alongside Dick Rowe—the Decca Records executive infamous for passing on the Beatles a year earlier. Seizing the opportunity, Harrison recommended that Rowe sign The Rolling Stones, a group the Beatles had recently discovered in April.
The competition’s top prize went to The Escorts, a local Liverpool outfit that would later see Paul McCartney contribute tambourine to their 1966 cover of “From Head To Toe.” Additionally, Harrison presented a snare drum to Lawrence “Larry” King of Dee Fenton’s Silhouettes, who was named the contest’s most promising drummer as his band secured a fourth-place finish.
