A fresh showcase at Hamburg’s City Hall features a unique collection of personal correspondence and rare snapshots documenting The Beatles’ formative years in the German port city.

Open to the public for free at the Rathaus Rathausdiele until May 25, this 48-panel display highlights the band’s evolution during their demanding two-year residency.
Among the visual highlights are images captured by Mike McCartney showing Paul and John with their signature Höfner and Rickenbacker instruments, both acquired locally at the Steinway shop.
Experts note that the group’s relentless schedule in the Reeperbahn’s red-light district—where they often played eight-hour sets—was the crucible that forged their amateur energy into professional mastery.

The exhibit draws on contributions from The Cavern, Mike McCartney, and the Liverpool Beatles Museum to provide an intimate look at the group’s mindset as they transitioned from skiffle roots to rock’n’roll icons.

Beyond the core members, the archive includes moving letters from early bassist Stuart Sutcliffe and original drummer Pete Best. Sutcliffe’s final correspondence, sent shortly before his tragic death from a brain hemorrhage at age 21, poignantly details his plans for a surprise homecoming that never occurred. Meanwhile, a letter from Pete Best to his mother, written just after Sutcliffe’s passing, underscores the era’s emotional weight.
By chronicling over 250 performances and nearly 1,200 hours of stage time across legendary venues like the Star Club and Indra, the exhibition illustrates how Hamburg fundamentally defined the band’s aesthetic and sound. Specific milestones, such as George Harrison’s 1961 update regarding their first recording contract, anchor the narrative of their rise toward global fame. Titled Harbor Cities-Global Stages, the event celebrates the partnership between Liverpool and Hamburg, even touching on later cultural ties like Kevin Keegan’s 1977 move to Hamburger SV, with plans currently underway to bring the display to the Liverpool City Region later this summer.
