The hit 2019 film Yesterday (directed by Danny Boyle and based on a screenplay centered on a musician who is the only person to remember The Beatles‘ songs after a global blackout) is being adapted into a stage musical in London’s West End.

The project features the return of much of the original team, including director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Richard Curtis (alongside Emma Freud), who have already completed several script drafts and held theatrical workshops to adapt the story for a live stage format.

A major public controversy has arisen because Jack Barth—the original writer who conceived the film’s storyline and shares a story credit—expressed his outrage on social media, harshly criticizing Richard Curtis and Emma Freud for failing to notify or consult him regarding the musical adaptation of his original creation.

Mr. Barth is currently seeking formal acknowledgment of his foundational contribution. He said:

‘I would like them to acknowledge their systematic scrubbing of my contribution and their past bad behaviour in all respects. And a little renegotiation of my profit participation wouldn’t go amiss.’
