Paul McCartney sat down with Zane Lowe to talk about his new solo album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane.
One of the most revealing moments of the interview emerges when Paul McCartney reflects on the weight of fame and how he has managed, after decades of global scrutiny, to protect his own humanity.
When asked how he maintains his ability to connect with others while being such a recognizable figure, Paul turns to a metaphor as raw as it is eloquent: he compares himself to the monkey that accompanies an organ grinder at the port of Saint-Tropez.
For McCartney, agreeing to take a picture with every person who asks implies a transmutation of his identity; in that instant, he ceases to be Paul and becomes an attraction, an object of visual consumption that is simply posing.

Paul said: «…And I get it, you know, ’cause I see someone famous and I want to take a picture, I want a reminder. But, uh, my line is, I say to them, you know, down in Saint-Tropez, there’s a guy on the harbor front and he’s got a monkey, and you can get your picture taken with the monkey. And I said, the minute I start doing that, you get your camera out, I feel like that monkey, ’cause I’m not me anymore. I’m the monkey. Um, and I say, it’s kind of important to me to be just me, not the guy who’s posing.»
“The minute I start doing that, I feel like that monkey; I’m not me anymore, I’m the attraction,” he confesses. This stance, while it may seem distant, does not stem from arrogance, but from an imperative need for emotional survival. McCartney has understood that, to remain himself and enjoy an authentic existence, he must draw clear boundaries. Instead, he prefers to spend that time talking and exchanging genuine stories, reminding us that, behind the pop icon, there is still a person who prioritizes real human connection over the digital souvenir that fame insists on turning him into.
