PAUL McCARTNEY RESPONDS TO BIZARRE CLAIMS REGARDING "Wonderful Christmastime"

A rather flippant claim recently circulated suggesting that Paul McCartney’s holiday classic is actually linked to the occult. Paul has finally addressed the viral rumors regarding alleged “witchcraft” in his 1979 festive hit.

In a new behind-the-scenes video shared by his team—timed with the release of a new official book about his post-Beatles band, Wings—the track’s origins are explored. “Wonderful Christmastime” famously opens with the lyrics: “The mood is right, the spirit’s up, we’re here tonight, and that’s enough.”

Online commentators have suggested that these lines refer to a group of people conducting a seance or witchcraft ritual, only to be caught in the act and hastily covering their tracks. Paul directly tackled this internet speculation in a Vevo video about the making of the song.

“There’s a theory online that the song is about people practicing witchcraft, getting discovered, and trying to cover it up,” he noted. “This is completely true and, in fact, I am the head wizard of a Liverpool coven. Either that… or it’s complete rubbish. And you know it’s the latter!”

The song reached number six on the UK charts in 1979 and has since become a staple of holiday television and radio.

Paul and his former Beatles bandmates have long been subject to misguided speculation since becoming a global sensation in the sixties (most notably the “Paul Is Dead” hoax of the late 1960s).

Looking ahead, Paul is preparing new material for next year.

It will be his first release since 2020’s McCartney III, which he described as his “rockdown” LP, recorded during COVID-19 pandemic restrictions at his home in Peasmarsh, near Rye in East Sussex.

Sources indicate that Paul has been working on the album all year. While he initially hoped for a late 2025 release, plans have shifted as they often do. Although not yet finished, the majority of the album is complete, and Paul is reportedly very proud of the work.
