SEARCHING FOR THE LIGHT AFTER THE DARK NIGHT: 'TIRED OF MIDNIGHT BLUE'

After settling in Los Angeles to record his new album, released in 1975, Extra Texture (Read All About It), George Harrison went out one night with music-industry executives in Los Angeles – an event that George found particularly depressing.

He recalled it in a conversation with Dave Herman – was an American disc jockey, popular in the New York metropolitan area from 1972 to 1998:

‘I (hadn’t written) a tune for about six months up until last Saturday. I sat down and decided I’d better get some tunes together. I just got into the mood of it and finished nine tunes and wrote a couple of new tunes. I had been to a Los Angeles club – ended up in the back room with a lot of grey-haired naughty people and I was depressed by what I saw going on there.‘

The first verse and chorus of the song ‘Tired of Midnight Blue‘ describe his thoughts upon returning home after that night, and then describe the progression of the morning, along with a clearer mind.

‘Tired of Midnight Blue’ was recorded on April 21 of that year, again at A&M Studios; the title was later altered after Melissa Manchester had a hit with a song of that name during the summer. The song was released on his album in September 1975.

Taking part in the recording of this song were Leon Russell on piano, Paul Stallworth on bass, and Jim Keltner on drums and percussion. George took charge of the vocals, electric guitar, slide guitars, and backing vocals. George praised Leon Russell‘s ‘fantastic’ piano contribution during a BBC Radio 1 show in September of that year, introducing the song alongside host Paul Gambaccini with a laconic: ‘You know those nights you go out and wish you hadn’t?'”
