John Lennon and Paul McCartney summoned engineer Glyn Johns to Abbey Road in early March 1969 (March 10, 1969).
Handing over the original eight-track masters from the previous January’s sessions at Apple Studios—an archive spanning eleven days of recording and the legendary rooftop performance—the duo tasked Johns with the formidable challenge of assembling an album from the tapes.
Explicitly excluded from the batch were the early reels captured at Twickenham Film Studios. Johns subsequently decamped to his preferred haunt, Olympic Sound Studios in Barnes, London, to begin the arduous task of sonic excavation. During his session at Olympic, he sifted through the tapes looking for suitable takes, rendering stereo mixes of twelve songs:
  • ‘The Walk’

  • ‘Get Back’

  • ‘For You Blue’

  • ‘Don’t Let Me Down’

  • ‘I’ve Got A Feeling’

  • ‘Let It Be’

  • ‘Teddy Boy’

  • ‘Two Of Us’

  • ‘Rocker’

  • ‘The Long And Winding Road’

  • ‘Dig A Pony’

  • ‘Save The Last Dance For Me’
