Five years ago, an iconic street sign from London’s world-renowned Abbey Road fetched a staggering £37,200 at auction, far surpassing its initial valuation of just £1,000 to £2,000. While the winning bid officially hit the hammer at £30,000, the final cost climbed significantly once the buyer’s premium and VAT were factored in. This piece was among 275 items auctioned on behalf of the Westminster City Council, a collective sale that brought in a total of £143,517. The two-week digital event was hosted by Catherine Southon Auctioneers & Valuers, based in Chislehurst, South East London.

The sign’s historical value is tied to 3 Abbey Road, the site of the legendary studios where The Beatles produced the bulk of their discography. Originally a nine-bedroom residence built in 1829, the property was transformed into a premier recording facility after being acquired by the Gramophone Company in 1928. That 2021 sale marked a milestone in the growing trend of high-value memorabilia; for comparison, a similar sign sold at Sotheby’s for a mere £320 in 1981, while another dated from May 1970 reached £10,625 at Bonham’s back in December 2013.
