HELLO LITTLE GIRL

In 1957, John Lennon composed “Hello Little Girl,” marking his very first composition. He mentioned that the track was inspired by an older tune from the 1930s or 1940s that his mother used to perform for him. This piece eventually became part of the setlist for the group’s unsuccessful 1962 audition at Decca. Before that, a home recording was captured featuring Stuart Sutcliffe on bass, which remains exclusive to bootlegs today.

Following this, an alternative performance by the Beatles—featuring John Lennon on lead vocals and differing from the Sutcliffe arrangement—was officially released on Anthology 1. Furthermore, the track was featured in the 2005 compilation The Songs Lennon and McCartney Gave Away as performed by the Fourmost.

During 1963, the Merseybeat group the Fourmost recorded the track at Abbey Road Studios under the direction of producer George Martin, launching it as their premier single. Shortly after, Gerry & The Pacemakers produced their own rendition, though the Fourmost release was chosen for distribution and climbed to number 9 on the charts in the United Kingdom.

Later on, the composition was featured in the 2005 biographical film Nowhere Boy, specifically during a sequence where Lennon performs the piece for McCartney while capturing it on a compact reel-to-reel recorder. Within the film’s credits, the songwriting attribution is assigned exclusively to John Lennon.
