Paul McCartney held a LIVE event on his TikTok account today. He did it on a platform where his account gathers more than 1.2 million followers, and where he answered some questions sent by his followers and talked about his new album.

During 45 minutes, and in front of more than 895,000 viewers, Paul answered from London questions that were mostly issues already formulated in previous interviews and others unrelated to the record (such as, for example, what his favorite bird is; to which he gave an answer without surprises: “the blackbird”).

This virtual meeting allowed Paul to recover some anecdotes about the new songs. When talking about ‘Down South‘, a track in which he evokes a hitchhiking trip he took with George Harrison, he related that in one of the stages of that journey they were picked up by a milkman who was driving his truck and, for lack of seats, George had to sit on top of the vehicle’s battery. At one point in the trip, the zipper of Harrison’s back pocket made contact with the two poles of the battery and he suffered a painful burn.

Those kinds of stories are what nourish ‘The Boys of Dungeon Lane’, an album that takes its title from a street located in the working-class neighborhood of Speke, where Paul and George spent part of their childhood (and where the Liverpool airport is located, today baptized with the name of John Lennon), and that McCartney has summarized in three words: “memories, family and love”.

Paul also mentioned having communicated with Ringo a few days ago, with whom he teams up on another of the songs on the album, ‘Home to us‘. “I talk very often with Ringo via FaceTime. As you know, he lives in Los Angeles. We talk regularly and we catch up. I’m glad to see that he is having a lot of success with his country music records” – here Paul mentions the title of Ringo’s album: ‘Long long…” (‘Long Long Road’).

His presence on a platform like TikTok has given him the opportunity to reflect on how pop music and the ways of consuming it have changed since those distant days of his youth. “We listened to 45 r.p.m. singles, and from there we went to LPs. Then came cassettes and CDs and now we are on streaming platforms. For me, it’s fine. It doesn’t matter the way people access music; they are all good as long as they allow you to continue having access to it.”

Answering a question from the Beatles Fan Club of Panama, Paul assured that when the group released their first record, in 1962, they hoped that at most they could have the favor of the public for two years. “At that time, that’s what an artist’s success lasted.” 64 years have passed and the Beatles’ songs are still relevant today and conquering new fans. Paul has an explanation for that: “I think the Beatles are the best group ever. I am a fan,” he said.

Paul McCartney’s event on TikTok represents an interesting milestone in the way legendary artists adapt to the new dynamics of the music industry. When there are these types of events, Paul stops being a distant figure or a historical icon to become a close and accessible person, which strengthens the emotional bond with fans of all ages.
