Paul McCartney has offered a heartfelt tribute to acclaimed director Rob Reiner following his sudden death, describing the tragic event as a shocking and unfair loss.

Reiner and his wife, Michele, were tragically discovered dead at their Los Angeles home in Brentwood on December 14th, in a case that police are currently investigating as an apparent homicide.

Tributes for the director of classics like When Harry Met Sally and his wife have flooded in from the entertainment and political spheres, with McCartney adding his voice to honor Reiner, with whom he had recently collaborated.

Paul had made a cameo appearance in Reiner’s film, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which premiered just this past September. Taking to social media, he expressed his profound shock at the violent and tragic passing of the Reiners, noting that the news hit him particularly hard because of their recent working relationship on Spinal Tap II. Paul remembered Reiner as “such an upbeat, lovable man.” Paul went on to lament, “Life can be so unfair, and this tragedy proves it.” He recalled Rob’s father, the great humorist Carl Reiner, noting that Rob had admirably followed in his footsteps by directing many wonderful films. “I will always have fond memories of Rob, and the idea that he and his wife will no longer be in the world with us is heartbreaking,” the former Beatle concluded.

Paul signed off by thanking the director for his humor and wishing him peace, sharing a photo of the two of them from the Spinal Tap set. Among the many other expressions of grief were those from former US President Barack Obama and Spinal Tap co-star Christopher Guest and his wife, Jamie Lee Curtis.

Guest and Curtis released a statement saying they were “numb and sad and shocked” by the “violent, tragic deaths of our dear friends” and affirmed that their “ONLY focus and care right now is for their children and immediate families,” vowing to provide all possible support.
