Paul stepped up as the musical guest for the first time since 2012 alongside host Will Ferrell. Paul McCartney graced the Saturday Night Live stage on May 16, reclaiming the spotlight to celebrate the show’s Season 51 conclusion.

Paul McCartney launched his Saturday Night Live takeover with a cameo during Ferrell’s monologue. The bit started with Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith—who, when dressed the part, looks strikingly similar to Ferrell—filling in for the monologue until Ferrell cuts him off. After reclaiming the floor, the actual Ferrell takes a question from Paul in the crowd, who eventually hops onstage to chat about his legendary hits before Paul jokes: “Get your .ss behind the drums, Chad!”

Smith did, as promised, back Paul on the kit for his rendition of “Days We Left Behind,” the debut single from his upcoming record The Boys of Dungeon Lane, arriving May 29. Behind McCartney and his group, vintage photos of his youth and his era with the Quarrymen were flashed onto a screen.

Later, he came back for “Band on the Run,” a classic he previously delivered during a musical guest appearance in 2010.

Paul performed a third tune, “Coming Up,” which Paul originally introduced to the show way back in Season 5.

Elsewhere in the night, Paul also surfaced as a car mechanic in a sketch with Ferrell and Marcello Hernandez.

This appearance signaled his fifth official run as an SNL musical headliner, though he also played a part in SNL50: The Anniversary Special last year.
