BILLY PRESTON's KEY INFLUENCE

Last September 2nd, he would have turned 80 years old.

Born in 1946, Billy Preston proved to be a musical prodigy from an early age. His history with The Beatles began in 1962 when a 15-year-old Preston was touring as Little Richard‘s organist, crossing paths with the as-yet-unheralded Liverpool group who were serving as an opening act.

Fate reunited them in January 1969. During the notoriously tense Get Back recording sessions (which culminated in the Let It Be project), the band was suffering from severe internal friction that threatened to tear them apart. Following a heated departure by George Harrison, George returned to the studio with Preston in tow after catching him play.

Billy’s arrival served as a fundamental turning point. His extraordinary keyboard talent brought an unmistakable brilliance to key tracks, to the extent that the single “Get Back” was officially credited to “The Beatles with Billy Preston“—the only time an outside artist was granted a co-billing credit on a Beatles single. Furthermore, his affable personality, humor, and easygoing nature helped diffuse the heavy atmosphere.

Preston’s positive impact was so profound that John Lennon formally proposed making him an official, permanent member of the group. Paul McCartney, however, shot down the idea, responding that it was difficult enough trying to reach agreements among four people without adding a fifth. Though he never became an official permanent member, his legacy as the ultimate “Fifth Beatle” remained cemented in rock history.

Preston was one of the most influential and talented keyboardists in the history of rock and soul. His musical journey began at a very early age, standing out as a piano and organ prodigy in gospel music before establishing himself in the secular scene. Over a prolific career spanning more than four decades, he transcended genre labels by collaborating with industry giants such as Ray Charles, Little Richard, Aretha Franklin, and The Rolling Stones.

His most remembered milestone occurred in 1969, when his providential intervention during the Get Back sessions not only revitalized The Beatles‘ sound with his virtuosity, but also eased the group’s internal tension at a critical moment. Beyond his historic association with the Liverpool quartet, Preston forged a solid and brilliant solo career, achieving major international hits in the 1970s and winning multiple Grammy Awards that reaffirmed his compositional and interpretive genius.

Billy Preston‘s legacy transcends the notes he played; he knew how to infuse every melody with soulful joy and an unmistakable spirit. Although he passed away in 2006, his music continues to resonate as an eternal testament to an unrepeatable talent that illuminated the landscape of modern music.
