FINANCIAL LESSONS THAT THE BEATLES LEFT US

The Beatles‘ songs are not just about love and peace. Their lyrics perfectly reflect the troubles, complaints, and lessons the group experienced with money throughout their career.

These are the main personal finance lessons they left us through their music:

Watch out for taxes and plan for your future

Song: “Taxman” (Album: Revolver, 1966)

“If you drive a car, I’ll tax the street; if you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat.”

In the 1960s, The Beatles reached the highest tax bracket in the UK, where the government kept 95% of what they earned. The song is a direct complaint about this.

Even if you don’t make millions, taxes are anyone’s largest silent expense. Learning how to file your taxes, knowing which expenses you can deduct (subtract to legally pay less), and using tax-free savings accounts is key to avoiding losing your money.

Money buys comfort, but not happiness

“I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love.”

At the start of “Beatlemania,” the band members became rich overnight. They bought luxury cars and mansions, but soon discovered that fame and money brought a lot of stress, isolation, and fake friendships.

Money is an excellent tool to give you security, health, and comfort. However, you should not make it the ultimate goal of your life. The things that truly matter (healthy relationships, peace of mind, and free time) do not have a price tag.

Diversify yor income (Don´t put all your egg in one basket)

“How does it feel to be one of the beautiful people? Now that you know who you are, what do you want to be?”

This song was written when the band began wondering what they would do with their money beyond music. This led them to create their own company, Apple Corps, to invest in technology, fashion, film, and discovering other artists.

Relying on a single source of income (like a single job) is very dangerous. If that source disappears, you are left at zero. Try to diversify by starting side businesses, investing in the stock market, or learning skills that allow you to do freelance work in your free time.

Beware of debt just to keep up appearances

“You never give me your money, you only give me your funny paper… and in the middle of negotiations you break down.”

Paul McCartney wrote this when the band’s business affairs were in total chaos. Although they were the most famous musicians in the world on paper, in reality they were trapped in terrible contracts, debts, and legal battles that froze their earnings.

Many people make the mistake of pretending they have money by using credit cards to buy expensive clothes or cars they cannot afford. Being full of “funny papers” (bills and debt) will destroy your peace of mind, no matter how successful you look to others.

The value of hard teamwork

“It’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been working like a dog… but when I get home to you I find the things that you do will make me feel alright.”

Before they were famous, The Beatles played up to 8 hours a night in underground bars in Hamburg, Germany, for very little money. That level of initial effort and financial discipline was what polished their talent.

There are no magic tricks to getting rich overnight. Financial success requires effort, consistency, and, many times, sacrificing hours of rest early in your career to build wealth that gives you peace of mind in the future.
